#CGBTakesOn: Kiarong

Today I decided to cafe-hop around Kiarong… Complex, to be precise. For those unfamiliar with the place, Kiarong Complex is home to many businesses and eateries, more notable ones include Baiduri Bank, CfBT, Nur Wanita Restaurant and Kaizen Sushi. Nearby point of interest is Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah, Brunei’s largest mosque. On weekdays, it can be quite difficult to get parking as there are a number of offices in the area.

Breakfast: Belluno Cafe

Situated on the same row as Kaizen Sushi and right next to Cengkih, this cafe offers the taste of Italy. Belluno, refers to “a town and province in the Veneto region of northern Italy”. The cafe is spacious and can accommodate 20-30 people.

I ordered their Latte and remembering the lessons learnt from the previous #CGBTakesOn, I decided to go for something light and healthy (well, relatively) and opt for their Avocado Cheese Toast. I had tried their latte before and thought it was too milky to my liking, so I was pleasantly surprised by this morning’s latte. Taste and texture were pretty good. The Avocado Cheese Toast was a tad bland.

The cafe also offers various kinds of desserts like macaroons and cakes and is well known for their mochi and gelato.

Location: Unit 2,  Ground Floor Block C, Kiarong Complex.

Opening Hours: Tuesday – Sunday, 08:00 – 22:00, Closed on Mondays, Friday 12:00 – 14:00

Lunch: Depot VLO Cafe

Lunch was at Depot VLO Cafe, which was only a block away from Belluno Cafe. This cafe is the brainchild of three friends – a chef, an art lover, and a food enthusiast and is the only place in Brunei serving German cuisine. I have always wanted to try this place since they opened in September 2012 but only managed to do so today.

Aside from German and European cuisine, the cafe also serves local favourites like Nasi Lemak. The cafe however only offers a few hot coffee drinks. I gave their cappuccino a try and found it to be alright – mild, medium bodied.

I love the interior of the cafe, which they described as ‘industrial, vintage-grunge style’. There are some pretty amusing decors and potted plants hanging around.

Location: Unit 6, Ground Floor Block B, Kiarong Complex.

Opening Hours: Daily, 10:30 – 22:30
